Health products as capsules, tablets, powder, ...
The most common forms of food supplements are available as solid dosage forms. These include capsules, tablets and powder. Capsules are food supplement formulas which are enclosed in a hard or soft capsule shell. The casing typically consists of gelatine or cellulose. Compared to tablets, capsules offer developers, contract manufacturers and consumers some decisive advantages. For example, over 74 per cent of herbal product consumers prefer two-part capsules instead of tablets. This is because capsules are easier to swallow than tablets.
Encapsulation is the method of choice for herbal formulas, as no pressing additives or binders are needed. In many instances, herbal formulas contain effective leaf, fruit or root powders or powder extracts that can be easily filled into capsules. In tablet production, on the other hand, the compression forces used can contribute to the decomposition and damage of plant products. Generally speaking, the process of absorption is also better when the active ingredients are incorporated into capsules. A tablet only consists of approximately 60 per cent natural active ingredients. The remainder contains binders, release agents and disintegrants. Tablets must first be dissolved before the body can absorb the substances they contain.
If a tablet only partially dissolves, this leads to reduced absorption of the active ingredients. Nevertheless, not all plant-based formulas are suitable for encapsulation. For less effective plants that require a high dosage, a powdered dosage form is recommended.
Encapsulation is a good choice for bitter tasting or sticky plant-based formulations. Single plants or combinations of up to 15 plants are best suited for contract production in capsule form. If there are too many herbs present, an effective dosage of each individual active ingredient is no longer possible.
