Food supplements are products that are intended to increase the supply of certain nutrients or active substances into the human body’s metabolic process at a threshold point between medicinal products and foodstuffs. They supplement a person’s general diet with certain nutrients or active substances. Typical ingredients include vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, secondary plant compounds and many more.
It is our view that food supplements are foodstuffs in concentrated form. Key studies have proven - contrary to legal interpretation - that without supplementation - i.e. by way of pure consumption - we no longer supply the human body with the active ingredients it needs in sufficient quantities.

This product group is regulated under EU law by Directive 2002/46/EC. In particular, the permissible minerals and vitamins are specified. As per the Food Supplements Ordinance stemming from this, a food supplement is:
„a food, that
is intended to supplement a general diet,
is characterised by a concentrate of nutrients or other substances with a nutritional or physiological effect, be it alone or in combination, and
is placed on the market in dose form, in particular, in the form of capsules, pastilles, tablets, pills, effervescent tablets and other similar forms of administration, as well as powder sachets, ampoules of liquids, bottles with dropper inserts and similar forms of administration involving liquids and powders, to be taken in measured, small quantities“
As these are legally grouped among food, in Germany they fall under the provisions of the Food and Feed Code (LFGB). The permitted vitamins and minerals are listed in Annex 1 of the Food Supplements Ordinance (NemV) of 2004. Otherwise, only food-specific raw materials in accordance with the Food and Feed Code (LFGB) and Novel Food Ordinance are permitted as additional ingredients.
Advertising claims and promises concerning food supplements are regulated by Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 (Health Claims). A secured positive listing is available for inspection within the EU, but has not yet been approved by parliament. Disease-related statements and indications are, as for other foods, not permitted.
